Part of our home education surrounds the weekly assignment of vocabulary words. As my children became high school aged students, I no longer assigned them words, but instead had them find their own words, usually about eight a week. We would meet weekly to share and discuss our new-found words. Sometimes I would put parameters on the words, such as one week they had to all be German-based words used in English, or words that were fun to say, or words that described spring, or words we didn't like.
I thought it might be fun to share some of them here.
Because it was my personal favorite, I'll share some of the words we like to say. These are words that we liked because of the way they sounded when spoken. I haven't noticed that these words have invaded our spoken vocabulary, but I do occasionally notice them in their written assignments, and that, of course, was my main objective! ::big grin::
ankyloproctia -- a stricture of the anus
aubergene -- eggplant, OR a deep purple color
extirpation -- exterminate
orgulous -- proud
pasquinade -- a lampoon posted in a public place, OR satrical writing
percolate -- to pass or ooze through
sesquipedalian -- user of big words
tempus fugit -- time flies
twitterpatted -- having lost one's senses ususally due to an attraction to the opposite gender
What are some of your favorite words to say? Nothing nasty or distasteful or curse words, please.
