Politics

Our oldest daughter, S, has been a politico all her life basically. When she was almost three she shunned her grammy upon learning that grammy had voted for Ross Perot in 1992. When S was 9 when she started volunteering on campaigns and helped with Bill Owen's campaign for Governor of Colorado. That was the first time I was referred to as "S's mom." It certainly hasn't been the last. S has volunteered on many campaigns since then and now works for a PAC/Small Donor Committee and will be the co-office manager for two state representatives starting in January.

S inspired my husband and I to become more politically active. Where S went, so did we. As a homeschooling family, that meant that all of us went.

K, on the other hand, is not that interested in politics. She would rather impact the culture via movies or music. She wasn't thrilled about being at rallies, political strategy sessions, phone banks, etc. The one thing she did enjoy was honk and waves. And I think she did enjoy seeing President Bush as the commencement speaker at the AFA and when he came to the World Arena. (That's where R learned to put up her first three "W" fingers and chant "four more years!" like a pro!)

So this discussion yesterday was particularly amusing to me. And you just never know when kids will say the darndest things.

I was driving our middle daughter, K, to her job at the library and S and R were with us. We were listening to the radio. Rush Limbaugh was on, that's what my husband had been listening to so when we turned on the radio that's what we heard. Normally we would change the radio immediately to a station playing music. However, Rush was talking about Nancy Pelosi and her expenditure in the amount of $15,000 for flowers, and her total expenditure of over $3 MILLION dollars (paid for by the taxpayers of America). This is an amount that is more than double what Rep. Hassert spent in one year, and she's only been doing this for 9 months.

Anyway, K said, "Next thing you know we'll be paying for her manicures and pedicures." This was quite a wry statement from our non-political daughter. Oldest daughter, S, said, "Or maybe her haircuts!"

I remarked, "Wow, K, that was pretty sarcastic of you ... and funny!"

K replied, "Well, politics is only interesting when you can make a joke out of it!"

That's darn funny!
